GloVEd – Global Virtual Education (2008-)

Business today is increasingly international. To decrease the costs and time consumption of travelling, new technologies and methods for virtual interaction and telepresence have been developed and taken into use. These tools along with the general development have altered the skill sets required of students graduating and moving to the world of commerce. To answer these challenges in education, a global virtual project course between Helsinki University of Technology (Espoo, Finland), Columbia University (New York, USA) and Indian Institute of Technology in Madras (Chennai, India) is developed. In addition, University of Lapland, Faculty of Education, Centre for Media Pedagogy (Rovaniemi, Finland) will be assisting with the pedagogical aspect of the course.
In the global virtual project course students from the information networks degree programme in TKK will be facilitating the collaboration project between civil engineering students from Columbia and IIT Madras. All interactions between the students will happen in the virtual environment of Second Life. The scientific objective of the international GloVEd research team is to study the technological, virtual and pedagogical aspects of facilitating collaboration in extremely virtual environments, such as Second Life. The GloVEd project is funded by the Centennial Foundation of the Finnish Technology Industries, and scheduled to run years 2008 and 2009.
