Theoretical background of business networks; basic types of business networks; company cases about networked business; summary. Reflection and analysis of company cases in the learning diaries. Essay about a selected theme.
A3 Business Process Networks
“Business Process Networks”, one of the Master level modules in the Information Networks Study Programme, provides knowledge and skills in developing and managing business processes in the networked economy. Key themes are: business processes and business models, innovations, services, information and communication technology as enabler, and inter-organizational knowledge sharing and creation. After completing the module, the student is capable to act as process development manager, process owner, in strategic development and consultancy tasks, and as researcher in the field of business process networks. TU-124.5100 Networked business processes and models
The course gives theoretical foundations to understand the development and management of business processes and business models in the networked business environment. The students apply the theoretical concepts in the reading circle meetings, in their learning diaries, group assignments and in the seminar. Guest lecturers bring practical company examples.
TU-124.5200 Business process development methods
The course enhances scientific and practical knowledge and mastery of business process development and scientific methods and related skills, such as development of interaction, communication and group facilitation skills. Many practical exercises of these skills are conducted during the course.
TU-124.5300 Development of Business Processes, project assignment
The course deepens the student’s capabilities in developing and managing networked business processes, and in conducting empirical research in the field. The student applies the process development and research methods and techniques to a real business process development project of a client organization.
TU-124.5400 Theoretical perspectives on business processes
The course presents theoretical approaches from different disciplines to the study of networked business processes. Central topics include learning, innovation, management and communication. The course provides a multidisciplinary approach to the problem based scientific research on business processes and networks, and supports the development of research topics.
TU-124.5510 Master’s thesis seminar
The seminar supports the thesis writing of the student throughout the whole Master’s Thesis process. The introductory lecture deals with scientific reasoning, research approaches and methods, and the structure of a scientific report. Each student also peer-reviews another student’s intermediate version.
As a result of the seminar, the student is able to apply the principles of scientific work to his/her own Master’s Thesis. (S)he is able to write and orally present his/her own Thesis in its different phases. The student can evaluate other Master’s Theses, to discuss research and to give and receive feedback about scientific work.
TU-124.5600 Business Game
The game conveys a holistic view of the different functions of an enterprise and their interdependencies. The game also gives the students an opportunity to practice strategic, operations and growth management in dynamic international markets. The business game makes it possible for the students to test their knowledge and skills in business without actual financial risks, and also trains teamwork under time pressure.

TU-124.5710 Global Virtual Collaboration Project
An international virtual project course, realized in international student teams from Aalto University and several foreign universities such as Columbia University (New York, USA), University of Washington (Seattle, USA), Indian Institute of Technology in Madras (Chennai, India), and University of Twente (Enschede, the Netherlands).
TU-124.7100 Doctoral research seminar in business process networks
Introductory lecture and seminar sessions. The student analyzes a selected doctoral dissertation. (S)he chooses his/her research approach and methods and presents them. The student writes and presents orally his/her doctoral research plan, and peer-reviews a fellow-student’s research plan.
TU-124.7200 Scientific Writing Seminar in Business Process Networks
Publishing criteria of scientific journals and conferences in the field. Evaluation of a selected article. Constructing scientific text. Planning and writing of own manuscript. Peer-reviewing of a fellow student’s manuscript. Scientific discussion.
